Kinja'd!!!4 Kinja'd!!! 52

Update: wouldn't be the first week of the season if nearly all of my predictions weren't wrong. Oh, good, the rest of the AFC West won. Great. The Bucs-Saints game was fun to watch, I'm glad to see that Teddy Bridgewater looked pretty good even in a loss, and Gardner Minshew still looks like if every Steve Miller Band song were a person.

Dammit. Why do the Chiefs have to be so good? Shit. Can’t we make them leave the division?

As I was taking my dog to the vet on Wednesday morning, I turned on my local sports talk and heard them casually mention “this Von Miller injury that has totally changed the outlook for the season”. Then they proceeded to not mention what the injury was or any other details for 5 minutes. I hadn’t heard anything about it until that moment. Then I found out, and my reaction was similar to That’s Good Sports’ reaction (NSFW/language):

This is after the scrimmage where the offense looked like crap and Bradley Chubb seemed to have a setback with his knee. Oh, and then Courtland Sutton hurt his shoulder (AC joint) a few days ago. Ok, it can stop now. STOP IT. The good news is that Chubb’s problem turned out to be some tendinitis that has subsided a bit and Sutton’s injury doesn’t seem to be as bad as they feared. No idea if either of them will play, though. Honestly, I expect the Broncos to look like bad preseason football for the first couple of weeks. I doubt many fans have playoff expectations. All I care about is that they beat the Buccaneers in a few weeks. The Broncos are the only team Tom Brady has a losing record against, and if the Bucs win it goes to .500. I don’t even really care if the Bucs go on a tear and win the Super Bowl, I just want them to lose that week. As far as their game against the Titans at 3 AM Tuesday morning (that’s what it feels like, anyway)... I feel like their first time on the field whether it’s offense or defense, it’ll set the tone for the season. Last year, their first play from scrimmage was a pathetically and profoundly stupid jet-sweep to a rookie tight end that had never carried the ball, let alone caught an NFL pass, and it was for a 10+ yard loss. I knew immediately it wasn’t going to be a good year. It was one of the worst play calls I had ever seen. It was an offensive coordinator trying to be cute, and he was basically saying “look how smart I am, everybody”. Yeah, we saw how smart you are. Bye, Felicia.

Anyway, enough about my mediocre-to-bad team. It’s going to feel weird seeing the Chargers without Philip Rivers at QB. It’s going to be even weirder seeing Cam Newton in a Pats uniform. Here’s something I didn’t expect... I don’t seem to hate the Patriots anymore. I think I just hated Brady and Belichick together. It would be super hypocritical of me to begrudge the Bucs for landing Brady after the Broncos snapped up Peyton Manning and got two Super Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl win out of it. The Bucs fans have had one Super Bowl win, and the rest has been a lot of misery. I thought Brady was ass last year, but he was also surrounded by ass. Now, he’s not. And I actually hope Cam has a decent comeback year (except against the Broncos, of course). It bothered me how Carolina just dropped him like that. Still, I’m pulling for Teddy Bridgewater to have a great season. And Alex Smith, if he sees the field this year. If you haven’t watched the ESPN doc on his injury, it’s amazing he can even walk right now.

Here in Denver we only get one CBS game and it’s... oh, for fuck’s sake NFL. You can’t even get week one right? Raiders at Panthers? That’s ok, we wouldn’t want to see the Pats-Dolphins game or anything. It’s only Bill Belichick’s first post-Tom Brady game. Hell, Browns-Ravens would be better. Or Jets-Bills. Nope. ARGH. I hope the Panthers destroy the Raiders. Really, I just hope it’s a bad blowout either way so they’re forced to change to another game. At least the early Fox game is a good one, Packers at Vikings. I haven’t been paying much attention to the NFC this offseason, so I have no idea how these two teams are trending. I’m leaning towards the Vikings, since the Packers are too dumb to give Aaron Rodgers someone good to throw to. The afternoon game is the one everyone wants to see, Bucs at Saints. I’m going to go with the Saints. The Saints are more or less the same team as last year, while the Bucs are all new. Plus, the Saints are at home. Look, no one should be surprised if the Bucs stumble a bit out of the gate. It wouldn’t be inconceivable for them to go 3-3 or 2-4. That’s what happened to Peyton Manning when he went to the Broncos in 2012, they started 2-3 and there were some BAD losses in there. Then they rattled off 11 straight wins. Yes, he was coming back from a devastating injury, but he was also learning a new offense with new coaches and new players. Tom Brady isn’t exactly a stranger to slow starts, either. Bucs fans, don’t press the panic button until or unless they get to week 8 and still look bad. Besides, they could still click right away instead and get rolling from the start. Sunday Night Football is Cowboys at Rams, because the NFL will never get tired of trying to force the Cowboys on everyone. Go Rams! Enjoy your new stadium. What’s it called, Sophie B. Hawkins stadium or something? Damn. I wish you were my stadium. I have to say, I’m over the whole Monday Night Football doubleheaders to start each season. I’m over it because the Broncos always seem to get shafted into the late game. I don’t want to be up until midnight to watch my team, dammit. Anyway, the first game is Steelers at Giants. Uh, let’s go ahead and take the Steelers there. The Giants have quite a way to go. Then it’s our game, Titans at Broncos. I really don’t know what to expect now. I think they are in the best possible position for a season opener in that everyone has completely written them off after Von Miller went out. I don’t know that anyone is picking them at all. If their first drive goes well, whether it’s defense or offense, then I pick them to win. But if they let the Titans march down the field and score right away, or the offense goes out and lays an egg in their first drive, they lose.

The rest:

Seahawks at Falcons - Good thing they’re playing in Atlanta. Hopefully the fires get put out soon. I don’t know, seems like it could go either way but I’ll take the Falcons only because they’re at home.

Jets at Bills - Bills. The Jets are hot garbage until they prove they aren’t.

Bears at Lions - I’ll say Lions, because at least the Lions know who their quarterback is.

Dolphins at Patriots - I have to go with the Patriots, because it’s not week 15-17 and that’s when the Pats always seem to shit the bed against the Dolphins. I’m really interested to see what Cam looks like in the Pats’ system.

Eagles at Washington Washingtonians - Feels like a toss up to me. I guess the Eagles?

Colts at Jags - I thought Philip Rivers was an odd choice for the Colts. We’ll see, I guess. My gut tells me it’ll be more like Brett Favre and the Jets rather than Brett Favre and the Vikings. But I think the Colts win here today.

Browns at Ravens - My gut is telling me to take the Browns, not sure why.

Chargers at Bengals - No thanks, I’m good.

Cardinals at 49ers - It’s too bad I’m not willing to pay for NFL Sunday Ticket, because this is a game I kinda want to see. This could be a good game. I’m taking the 49ers.

How was your team’s offseason? Are you filled with hope or dread, or some combo of the two like I am?

No, I found out Wednesday morning, but apparently it was all over the news on Tuesday and I missed it.

Rivers is in Indy now? Shows how much I’ve been paying attention.

I’m still in Tour de France mode.

T hreadjack alert: his is now a professional cycling open thread.

How about Roglic as the peloton’s strongest man going into week 3? And Poga car at #2? Two Slovenian cyclists in the entire peloton, and they sit 1 and 2. Crazy race.

Yeah, it’s weird. I can get used to it though.

Someone should take clips of the games, remove the fake crowd noise, and replace it with a laugh track. That would be YouTube gold.

This Bears/Lions game is sooooo boring. Navy is still calling dump and doink plays for Tru bisky. Aggressive play calls are out of sync against the Lions defense.  Dropped passes and Jimmy Graham can no longer jump to catch high passes that he used to be known for.

Broncos were going to be bad this year regardless. The homer bias is super strong on the local sports talk radio.

Go Lion's!

Bad? No. Mediocre? Probably. Every host on the radio was picking them to be 7-9/9-7 or somewhere in there. But they weren’t going to be bad. If their record ends up below 8-8 I’ll eat my words, but I think they’re going to struggle in the first half of the season and then start to find their groove, too late to make the playoffs. Not having the preseason is definitely going to hurt them at the start.

Also, go Lions. They’re my second-string team.

As a Patriots fan, I really can't see how Cam is going to work here. It looked good for most of the game then Cam had to be restrained coming off the field after the victory formation as he was getting into it with some Dolphins players. That's really not going to fly with this organization and might be part of why he was still available.

I’m not giving up on Mitch yet. The play calling just doesn’t gel with his strengths. Nagy is a malfunctioning traffic light that doesn’t know when a yellow or red should appear and at the wrong times flashes both.  The rarely used green light almost always comes out way too late to make a difference -- Mitch saved his ass today.

I actually understand why we had to trade Hopkins: we couldn’t afford to both renegotiate his contract and resign Watson. The only reason why Arizona can afford Hop is bc The King of The Lollipop Kids is still on his rookie contract.

No, the reason why I think we must Fire BoB is because he won’t be able to take the Texans to the SB no matter who he has playing for him. Seriously, it’s AFC Championship or he gone.

It’s only one game but... Jamal Adams looks like he was more than worth what we gave up. I’d go so far as to say he overshadowed russ, who had an MVP level game. I wish I could fast-forward to next week, really looking forward to the Patriots coming to town.

Is it mean of me to take satisfaction in the 49ers sitting at 4th in the NFC West? I wonder if the Cardinals will finally be elavated to “good team” status, or if they’ll just keep continuing their frustrating trend of providing a major roadblock against division rivals...

Even stranger than it was to see Vinatieri in Colts colors when it first happened. I didn’t get to see the game, but apparently Rivers wasn’t the magic ingredient for victory today. I never thought Brisset was Indy’s ticket to success, but I hope they know what they’re doing with Rivers.

No doubt that Rivers is a better fit for Reich’s offense, and more suited to be able to get the ball to their skill position players. I think the loss is more on the Colts defense than anything.

Nah. They won more than that last year with a worse roster, no stability at QB until the last 5 games of the year, and a terrible OC. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a rabid homer (unless they win against the Titans tonight, then I’ll probably lose my mind ), but if they go 6-10 it would likely   be a disaster. Looking at their schedule the only games I would say they have no realistic chance are the two against the Chiefs, and maybe the Saints . They may not have Von but they have Bradley Chubb and Jurrell Casey and Kareem Jackson. That’s not a bad bunch. The defense will probably be good enough to keep them in most games. The offense will be the weak spot because they’re so young and inexperienced, but there’s good potential everywhere . I honestly think their floor is 8-8; unfortunately, I think that’s also their ceiling. Probably just good enough to give us fans false hopes about the final 7th playoff spot near the end of the season.
